Metta Retreat Series II
Hatred is not overcome by hatred,
It is overcome by love;
This is the eternal law!
~Dhammapada verse 5~
Metta is the quality of loving kindness or universal friendliness, which is best experienced rather than discussed technically. The practice of Metta overcomes the unwholesome mental states of hatred and anger and brings peace and happiness to one’s own mind. It is a pure state of mind that is beneficial to oneself and others, now and hereafter.
By practising Metta meditation, one gains strength and feelings of abundance, deep peace and happiness. This practice of metta meditation is flexible, versatile, universal and boundless. With this practice, one is able to overcome angry, violent and destructive mental states, while building up the required concentration for the development of insight. Metta also creates the condition for us to have a healthy relationship with every living being, so important for a happy family, society and the entire world.
The practice of Metta in an intensive manner for cultivating deep concentration can be done either on your own or in a group. In this coming retreat, you will have the opportunity to spend some time to perform Metta meditation and deepen your practice in the tranquil surroundings of mist covered hills and cool mountain breeze.
Experience the miracles of Metta meditation to heal oneself and other, and to share your love and joy with all sentient being all over the universe. The other benefits of metta are being able to sleep well, and having a pleasant encounter with all beings. The greatest of these benefits is that when we have Metta, our defilements such as ill will and anger are overcome.
Take this opportunity to develop
our concentration for our spiritual development,
radiate our love for our world;
share the greatness with all sentient beings,
and cultivate for the attainment as
with experience, one improves.

Topic : Healing Group at Tara, Australia
Date : 23rd April 2009, Thursday
Time : 8.30 pm
Synopsis:Illnesses are prevalent these days and we often hear of friends or relatives faced with stroke, heart attack or cancer. There are so many people with serious illnesses which are even reported in the news media. At Tara Institute, they conduct healing courses, based on the teachings by Lama Zopa Rinpoche for the seriously ill people and their carers. The aspects covered in the healing courses are briefly mentioned in Venerable Carolyn Lawler’s biodata below. You are invited to this interactive session to learn and share your experiences. This session is not restricted to those with illnesses or their carers, but to all healthy, concerned and interested sentient beings too. All are welcomed.
Biodata :
Venerable Carolyn Lawler was a counselor in a well known Australia self-help program for cancer patients, developed by Ian Gawler, who had himself survived widely spread secondary bone cancer as a young man. In 1991, Venerable attended a healing meditation retreat at Tara Institute (TI) in suburban Melbourne, Australia. This was no ordinary retreat, but one lead by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to cater for those seriously ill and their carers.
The focus of Rinpoche’s healing course was on “relative healing” (a perfectly proper and appropriate aspiration for person with serious illness) and “ultimate healing” (Venerable describes it as, healing into our full Buddha-to-be-ness). Rinpoche’s course gave opportunity to seriously sick people a chance to access techniques and practices that would help them to grow positive seeds for future lives.
Venerable have since than continued to conduct such courses covering areas such as : the nature of healing, precious human rebirth, impermanence, the nature of the mind, loving kindness and compassion. In addition, the other main focus was on meditation practices, relaxation, breathing techniques, mindfulness, pain management, white light healing imagery, meditation to help generate love and compassion, tong-len and occasional short analytical meditations on some of the topics.
Venerable also visit dying people and conduct funerals on the advise of Geshe Doga.
Venerable is fortunate to work with many dedicated people such as, Bob Sharples, Venerable Ailsa Cameron (editor of Rinpoche’s book Ultimate Healing), Venerable Pende Hawler, Venerable Kaye Miner and Venerable Choenyi (Diana Taylor). Venerable continues to be TI’s spiritual program co-ordinator.

Topic: Be Still and Know: Seeing our inter-being nature
Synopsis: Human is one of many species living on this planet earth. Yet, we have been acting like we are the one and only species, using a lot of natural resources to serve our greeds – in the process destroying living environments of many other species driving them to extinction. Realizing we are inter-be with other species, we can live in harmony with them. Seeing that we are not separate from other people, we know that our happiness depend on other’s happiness and vice versas. This will bring peace and happiness and make our lives more sustainable. We will go back to our breathing, calming ourselves, and see how the practice of stopping and clear seeing can help us deal with the stress of modern life.

WACANA 2008

Vision, Values, Vitality
A Buddhist leader is not our everyday leader. With the Buddha as our ultimate benchmark, much is expected from the leaders of our community. The Buddhist leader is the torch-bearer of the Dhamma and Sasana, thus he or she should be able, upright and selfless.
WACANA 2008 shall discuss the main elements of Buddhist leadership, that is, its vision, values and vitality. We shall define and reaffirm the critical role of the Buddhist leader in charting the growth and development of Buddha-Sasana, address the ideals and realities or our leadership, and contemplate the means to cultivate future visionary leaders.
WACANA 2008 is jointly organized by Nalanda Institute, Buddhist Gem Fellowship, and the Buddhist Maha Vihara. It is specially catered for Buddhist community leaders, activists, Dhamma propagators and any Sangha members and lay Buddhists who are keen in the subject of leadership development in the country.
In conjunction with the event, The 2008 Nalanda Awards will be conferred by the Nalanda Institute to pay tribute to lay Buddhists who displayed exceptional and exemplary leadership qualities in their respective areas of expertise. These individuals have worked tirelessly and contributed enormously in promoting and preserving the vision, values and vitality of Buddhism.
Be part of this gathering of Buddhist community leaders and activists at WACANA 2008 to discuss these pertinent leadership issues affecting the future of our community! To participate, please complete the online registration form before 16 November 2008.
