2. Dhamma Talk by Venerable Carolyn Lawler
Topic : Healing Group at Tara, Australia
Date : 23rd April 2009, Thursday
Time : 8.30 pm
Synopsis:
Illnesses are prevalent these days and we often hear of friends or relatives faced with stroke, heart attack or cancer. There are so many people with serious illnesses which are even reported in the news media. At Tara Institute, they conduct healing courses, based on the teachings by Lama Zopa Rinpoche for the seriously ill people and their carers. The aspects covered in the healing courses are briefly mentioned in Venerable Carolyn Lawler’s biodata below. You are invited to this interactive session to learn and share your experiences. This session is not restricted to those with illnesses or their carers, but to all healthy, concerned and interested sentient beings too. All are welcomed.

Biodata
:
Venerable Carolyn Lawler was a counselor in a well known Australia self-help program for cancer patients, developed by Ian Gawler, who had himself survived widely spread secondary bone cancer as a young man. In 1991, Venerable attended a healing meditation retreat at Tara Institute (TI) in suburban Melbourne, Australia. This was no ordinary retreat, but one lead by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to cater for those seriously ill and their carers.

The focus of Rinpoche’s healing course was on “relative healing” (a perfectly proper and appropriate aspiration for person with serious illness) and “ultimate healing” (Venerable describes it as, healing into our full Buddha-to-be-ness). Rinpoche’s course gave opportunity to seriously sick people a chance to access techniques and practices that would help them to grow positive seeds for future lives.

Venerable have since than continued to conduct such courses covering areas such as : the nature of healing, precious human rebirth, impermanence, the nature of the mind, loving kindness and compassion. In addition, the other main focus was on meditation practices, relaxation, breathing techniques, mindfulness, pain management, white light healing imagery, meditation to help generate love and compassion, tong-len and occasional short analytical meditations on some of the topics.

Venerable also visit dying people and conduct funerals on the advise of Geshe Doga.

Venerable is fortunate to work with many dedicated people such as, Bob Sharples, Venerable Ailsa Cameron (editor of Rinpoche’s book Ultimate Healing), Venerable Pende Hawler, Venerable Kaye Miner and Venerable Choenyi (Diana Taylor). Venerable continues to be TI’s spiritual program co-ordinator.
